In today’s digital era, data has become a valuable asset and a fundamental element for decision-making in many organizations

This exponential growth has led to an increase in concerns about the quality, privacy, and security of information. In response to these challenges, regulations and legislations around data management have emerged, such as the “General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)”.

This law ensures the fidelity and integrity of data, which can only be achieved through data governance. This regulation is a set of policies defined in the corporate sphere, aimed at carrying out efficient and ethical data management.

In this article, we tell you about the rules included in this legislation and how data governance is the best ally for complying with it.

General data protection regulation (GDPR)

As previously mentioned, in this new era of digitalization, data is key for any organization, and the European Union has created legislation like the GDPR with the aim of protecting the most valuable information of its citizens. But what does it involve?

It is one of the most recognized regulations in the field of data management and analytics. This law was approved in April 2016, although two years were required for its implementation at the European level. This Regulation, approved by the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union, and the European Commission, aims primarily to strengthen and unify data protection for all individuals within the European Union.

Some of its basic rules are as follows:

  • Companies must obtain explicit consent to collect data from their customers.
  • Organizations must provide transparent information about who processes personal data and for what purpose.
  • This regulation recognizes the right to access and portability of data, allowing individuals to access their information transparently and free of charge.

Compliance with this regulation is mandatory for companies based within the European Union and also applies to companies outside this territory if they manage data of European citizens.

What is Data Governance?

This standard has been one of the main drivers of the concept of data governance, as compliance requires adherence to certain rules.

Within data governance, it is essential to have “drivers”, people who establish and enforce this methodology. These actors play a fundamental role in implementing and supervising data governance policies and standards within the organization. But how can an effective data governance be created?

Through 7 simple steps:

  1. Designate a person responsible for managing the entire data governance process.
  2. Define goals and objectives, which must be realistic and specific to be easily measurable.
  3. Establish metrics, to measure the progress of the program and know if the previously set goals are being achieved.
  4. Define policies, which will allow the storage and processing of data based on managing information from an ethical and integral point of view.
  5. Communicate the policies to all employees of the organization to unify processes and clarify objectives.
  6. Measure results to firsthand know which aspects are working and which are subject to modifications.
  7. Conduct audits periodically to know if policies are being carried out and how they affect the objectives.
